How to Do a Transition

Beatmatching gets two songs running together. The transition is how you actually swap the room from one to the other so nobody notices the join. Here's the one every beginner should learn first — the bass swap.

Everyone learns to beatmatch and then hits the same wall: okay, the two songs are running together — now what? The transition is the "now what". It's the handful of seconds where you actually swap the crowd from the old track to the new one, and getting it clean is what separates a mix from two songs awkwardly overlapping. This guide teaches the one every beginner should own first — the bass swap — the reason so many pro mixes sound effortless.

01What a transition actually is

A transition is the handover. One track is playing to the room; you've got the next one beatmatched and ready. The transition is the ten or twenty seconds where you take the crowd off the first track and put them on the second — without a gap, a clash, or a jarring cut that empties the floor. Done well, most people never notice it happened. That "seamless" feeling every good DJ set has? It's just transition after transition, each one clean.

Here's the trap almost every beginner falls into: they beatmatch two tracks, slam the crossfader across, and it sounds like a mess — muddy, muffled, too much going on. The tracks were matched fine. The transition was the problem. And the single biggest reason it turns to mud has a name and a fix.

Why two tracks together turn to mud

It's the bass. The low end — the kick and the bassline — is the loudest, most physical part of any track, and it's mixed to sit alone. Play two basslines at the same time and they fight: the frequencies pile up, the energy doubles, and your ears hear "muddy" and "muffled". The crossfader on its own can't save you, because halfway across you've got both basslines at full volume at once. The pros don't fix this with the crossfader. 02Step zero: get them beatmatched

A transition sits on top of a beatmatch. Before you can swap anything cleanly, the two tracks have to be running at the same tempo with their beats locked together — or the handover sounds like a car crash. If you're not solid on this yet, that's the thing to nail first (we've got a full beatmatching guide). In short, it's two jobs:

1 Tempo

Same speed

How fast each track runs, measured in BPM (beats per minute). Two tracks at different tempos will always drift apart. You fix tempo with the pitch / tempo fader — slide it to speed one track up or slow it down until both run at the same BPM.

2 Phase

Same timing

When the beats land. Even at the identical tempo, two tracks can be out of step — one kick landing just before the other. You fix phase with the jog wheel or platter — a tiny nudge slides one track's beats forward or back until the kicks land exactly together.

Tempo first, then phase. There's no point lining up the kicks if the two tracks are running at different speeds — they'll just drift straight back apart. Set the speed, then set the timing. Always in that order.

The flam is that "d-dun" flutter you hear when two kicks land a hair apart — like a horse galloping. When they slide perfectly on top of each other the flam disappears and you get one solid "dun." That disappearing flam is the sound you're chasing.

Pro Tip

Don't watch the waveforms — close your eyes. The screen shows you the beats, and it's tempting to line them up with your eyes. But the screen lies just enough to fool you, and the club CDJ or turntable you play on one day might not show you anything useful. Train the ear from day one: line them up with the sound, then glance at the screen only to confirm. Your ears are the instrument here.

03The bass swap, step by step

This is the whole move. Track A is playing to the room. Track B is beatmatched, locked, and cued in your headphones — its bass (the low / LOW EQ knob) already turned right down before anyone hears it. You're going to hand the room over by trading the low end from A to B in one clean move.

  1. Kill B's bass, then bring B in

    With track B's low EQ turned all the way down, push its channel fader up (or slide the crossfader toward it). B's drums, hats and melody now play over A — but with no bass, the two tracks don't fight. It should already sound layered and full, not muddy. If it's muddy here, B's bass isn't actually down — check it.

  2. Ride the layer for a few bars

    Let both tracks run together like this for 4 to 8 bars. This is the bit that sounds impressive — two tracks weaving, one bassline holding it all down. Keep an ear on the beatmatch and nudge if it drifts. You're waiting for the right moment to make the swap.

  3. Swap the bass — on the "1"

    As a new phrase begins (count of 1, usually where the drop or the next 8/16 bars kick in), do the swap in one motion: cut A's bass down to zero and bring B's bass up to full at the same instant. The low end changes hands cleanly — one bassline out, one in, never both. This single move is the whole technique, and landing it on the "1" is what makes it feel intentional.

  4. Fade the old track out

    B is now carrying the bass and the room. A is just extra layers on top with no low end. Pull A's channel down and out (or finish the crossfader move) over a few bars. The crowd is fully on track B and never heard a gap or a clash. That's a clean transition.

Pro Tip

Only one track ever carries the bass. That's the whole rule, and if you remember nothing else, remember that. Two basslines at once = mud, every time. So the low EQ is doing the real work of the transition — the crossfader just tidies up the top end afterwards. Beginners reach for the crossfader; DJs reach for the bass knob.

Same on every deck. The names and feel change — a controller's little jog, a CDJ's big platter, a turntable's actual spinning record — but it's always these two jobs: slide the fader to match speed, nudge the wheel to match timing.

04Timing: land it on the phrase

A bass swap done at a random moment sounds like a mistake, even when the levels are perfect. Done at the start of a phrase, it sounds deliberate and musical. Dance tracks are built in blocks of 8, 16 and 32 beats — count "1 2 3 4" four times and you've counted a 16-beat phrase. The big moments (the drop, the new section) land on the "1" of a phrase, and that "1" is exactly where your swap should land:

  1. Count phrases, not beats. Play any dance track and count "1 2 3 4" over and over, raising a finger every time you hit a new "1". Feel where the music turns over into a new section — that's your swap point.
  2. Bass-out, bass-in — slow. On two beatmatched tracks, practise only the low-EQ move: bass down on one, up on the other, at the same instant. Do it ten times until your hands do it without thinking. Levels first, timing second.
  3. Swap on the drop. Cue B so its drop lines up with a phrase change in A, and make the bass swap land exactly on that drop. Nail this once and you'll understand why it feels so good.

06Common mistakes (and the fix)

07The bass swap on different gear

The best part: every DJ mixer and controller has a 3-band EQ — a low, mid and high knob (or fader) on each channel. That means the bass swap works on all of it, from a £269 controller to a club CDJ setup. The layout changes; the move is identical. Master it once and you can walk up to any booth and do it.

Controllers

Small touch-sensitive jogs and a pitch fader per side. Light and responsive — the easiest place to learn. What you practise in the Mix Simulator maps straight onto a controller.

CDJs

Big heavy platters plus a long, precise tempo fader — the club standard. Same two jobs, but the larger jog gives you finer control. This is the gear most bookings put in front of you.

Turntables

A real spinning record is your jog and a pitch slider sets the speed. The most physical, most rewarding way to do it — and there's no sync at all, so your ear is everything.

Pro Tip

Learn it once, and it transfers everywhere. The ear skill is identical on all three — so don't panic about which gear you own. Master the listening on whatever you've got (even a browser), and stepping onto club CDJs or vinyl is just getting used to a different feel, not learning a new skill. Q1. Why do two tracks played together often sound muddy?
Turning down won't fix it — quiet mud is still mud. The problem is two basslines fighting.
Correct. Bass is the loudest, heaviest part of a track. Two basslines at once pile up and turn to mud — which is exactly why the bass swap only ever lets one track carry the low end.
